The phrase getting grounded can have a negative connotation. We think back to having freedom stripped away because of something we did as a kid growing up. But the new alternative treatment that is gaining traction has actually been around since the first people walked the earth. And believe it or not, that's the treatment....walking on the earth.
All current research on Statins shows two very important things.
1. Statins are not scientifically proven to prevent heart disease, which is the primary reason millions of people are on these drugs in the first place.
2. The Statin side effects are now clearly correlated by the research. Extensive use of Statins leads to many serious problems including muscle pain and weakness, decreased immune system, and brain degeneration leading to Alzheimers, Dementia, and depression.
So why are they still being prescribed more and more all the time? It's either ignorance or greed. So if your doctor prescribes this medication for you, ask them which one it is for them.
How to actually prevent heart disease.
Specific anti-inflammatory diet and plenty of exercise daily.
This is a huge topic of conversation here in America. How did we get here? How do we fix the problem? 100 experts can give you 100 different answers to those questions. I'm writing this blog to boil all the confusion down to its bare bones. So put on your tinfoil hats and get ready for a rough ride through a dark chapter in our history.
Opioids are nothing new. In fact they are some of the oldest known drugs in human history with origins around 5,700-5,500 B.C.
So how come it took 8,000 years for things to get out of hand? One word MONEY.
Back in the 80's Big Pharma had a big idea. They took a drug that does 2 things incredibly well ( eliminates pain and is incredibly addictive) and started a campaign to push it to every corner of the country. It works well initially, but the more you use it you need higher doses for a similar effect and all the while the person is becoming more and more dependent on the drug. Lifelong customers. And the only thing a patient needed to present to the doctor with was pain.
If this sounds like the opening narration to a story about the largest drug empire ever built...it is. The only difference is it was completely legal because they bought the only agencies that could regulate them. This combined with some seriously altered research to prove to the medical community and general population that the drug was not addictive got their foot in the door. And here we are.
Only now that the problem has reached critical mass and there is no amount of money that can change the narrative about the dangers of the drug and shady dealings of the past have these super companies started to back track. They now admit that the research was faulty, and that they knew it. They either paid off or bullied nearly every M.D in the country to use the new wonder drug from everything to a sprained ankle to a tooth ache.
Now we know why we are here. So what can we do about it? Have no fear Big Pharma steps up again!
Now there is a new drug to help people with the withdrawal symptoms of opioid addiction. They are even more bold than the most cutthroat drug lords this world has ever seen. They get money by getting you addicted, then they make more money getting you off one drug and on to the next. And make no mistake, the body count of this drug empire is higher than any other drug war this country has ever fought.
My solution. Seek alternative forms of pain management. Chiropractic, massage, accupuncture, yoga. Take tumeric or even hop on the new craze of hemp oil. Take charge of your own health.Do your own research. Work preventatively to eat right and exercise so that the body doesn't break down as quickly. You have the power, and now you have a little bit more knowledge.
Here in Colorado we get to experience of all four wonderful seasons. Spring,Summer,Fall and last but not least Winter.
So what about this talk of a 5th season called Flu Season. Many people fear the approach of this time of the year because illness is all but inevitable. This fear is due to a lack of understanding of what is actually happening.
So bundle up to stay warm, supplement with vitamin D, drink more room temperature or warmer water, stop all the sugar and do more of whatever helps you beat stress. And enjoy these wonderful Colorado Winters.
Posture is not only important to your health and longevity, it also has the power to shift how others see you and how you see yourself!
Experiment: Which of these two people pictured above is healthier. Presented with just the picture, the amazing thing is that nearly 90-95% of us will pick the woman on the right. Why? The smile maybe, the yoga mat, the upright posture, definitely. Now she could have a full occlusion of both carotid arteries and be seconds away from a deadly stroke and the guy on the left could be healthy as a horse, but perception is a large part of reality. this is called posture bias
Now the astounding part. Research shows that a more upright posture actually does reduce your risk of disease and promote longer life. But the second part to this equation is that people will treat you like you are healthier because of the posture bias. They will assume you are healthier, treat you as such, and that treatment will actually in turn make you even healthier. In comparison to the man on the left who will be seen as less capable, treated as a sicker person, and that can actually increase infirmity and decrease lifespan!
Posture is developed early on as we learn to crawl and eventually stand and walk for the first time. This continues to develop for years and is either maintained or changed depending on our routine activity. The two big posture destroyers are sitting and technology. We lose the important structure leading to loss of motion and function and the resulting pain. If left unchecked leading to degeneration and the aforementioned decrease in life expectancy.
So fight poor posture and let good posture power a healthier you! Get adjusted and use specific stretches and strengthening exercises to correct your personal spinal issues daily. And as always watch your posture as you move through life. It could be the single best thing you can do for your health.
The phrase, "you are what you eat" is a very wise truth. But the actual process is a little more complicated than that. A breakdown in this system can lead to all of the most common chronic diseases that we are faced with today. The picture above shows the single line of defense between your intestines and what you eat and your bloodstream and what gets absorbed. In a healthy gut your cells are held together by tight junctions and only allow digested and useful substances into the blood. If your bowels gets inflamed then undigested particles and toxins can slip through into the blood stream hence the term "leaky gut".
So what can you do to avoid inflaming your gut? Every single thing you eat is either inflammatory or anti-inflammatory. And you probably already know where certain food items go.
It's just that simple. Avoid the inflammatory things and eat the anti-inflammatory ones. The issue is simple is not easy. This requires the dreaded "lifestyle change". Prepared meals, not convenient, doesn't taste like added sugar and MSG. These inflammatory foods are actually addictive in the same way opioid drugs are. So how are we to win this battle of the leaky gut?
The stakes are too high not to. An inflamed gut =an inflamed brain. Every chronic disease we face today can be attributed to the relative health of this thin layer of cells in our intestines. IBS, Colitis, autoimmune diseases, cancers, mental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and so much more are caused/intensified by what we eat every day. Its going to be tough to make changes, but even one swap a day to the anti inflammatory foods is a step in the right direction. Relapses are allowed, like i mentioned earlier this is the equivalent of getting off addictive drugs. But like conquering most addictions it is well worth it for your overall health and well being.
Lets eat to succeed, because after all we are what we eat.
Remember when 4 out of 5 medical doctors endorsed marlboro cigarettes. Looking back its almost comical if it hadn't resulted in the premature deaths of hundreds of thousands or even millions of people due to cancer and lung disease. We know now smoking is bad, people do it anyway, but at least they can make an informed decision. This blog is attempting to do the same with what is being referred to as the new smoking... sitting.
Advances in travel and entertainment along with shifts from labor oriented to computer oriented work have humans sitting at unprecedented amounts in modern society. Approximately 13 hours a day, coupled with 8 hours of sleep we get 3 measly hours of movement per day. That lack of motion is destroying our joints and muscles leading to many chronic pain symptoms that people visit the chiropractor for.
Now the really scary part. Even if you exercise regularly, research shows that it can not overcome that amount of sitting. You still are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, arthritis and muscular imbalance and increased mortality just to name a few of the many issues.
Increased mortality rates, in spite of exercise levels. WOW! Sitting is slowly killing you just like cigarettes have been doing for decades and there is nothing you can do about it. Oh wait, yes there is. Stop sitting so much. Turns out this can be almost as hard to do as kicking the nicotine addiction. It takes vigilance and lifestyle shifts. For every 30 minutes of sitting at least 5 minutes of walking at a brisk pace is necessary to reverse the effects of the sitting. Lets run the numbers. 13 hours a day sitting, 26 half ours of sitting 5 minutes per half hour of sitting leads us toooooo 2 hours and 10 minutes of walking to reverse the curse of sitting per day.
So what are we to do? Stand instead of sitting whenever possible. I always recommend seated to standing desks for my patients that have to be at a desk all day. If you reduce your sitting time, you reduce amount of walking / movement required to keep things in check. So while at work or at home stand up. Because 50 years from now people will look back at us and laugh thinking how naive we were to not see the obvious danger signs sitting right in front of us.
Summer fun in the sun doesn't have to be dangerous to your health. To enjoy the season to it's fullest just follow these tips and be sun smart.
This 5 step process has been around for a while, and while I agree with a majority of the advice, allow me to make one important correction. I will be removing Slop and replacing it with a general guide to all sun activities.
In case you don't follow both human and coral health stories regularly, let me summarize some facts. Sunscreen can be just as damaging to your skin as the sun it's protecting you from. It's not just hurting you, the cumulative effects of tons of washed off sunscreen at beaches around the world is destroying our reefs and marine life in them. For these reasons I remove sloping on sunscreen as a "Sun Smart" activity.
So what are you supposed to do to protect yourself and those kiddos during the summer? Lets learn how to responsibly enjoy the sun.
Without going back to geometry, physics and astronomy class, the simple solution is that direct sunlight is more damaging than indirect. So avoiding the time of day when the summer sun is at its most damaging is a very powerful protective tool. If you stay out of the sun during peak hours you will be just fine, even without protection. The problem is that during the summer the peak direct sun is from approximately 11:00am- 5:00pm. Of course this is prime pool or BBQ time, so what are we to do?
This is where the rest of the sun smart tips can help.
If you have to be outside in direct sunlight hours you MUST follow these sun protection tips.
#1 Slip on a long sleeve shirt and long pants. Many clothing companies now offer very light weight breathable clothing that can protect you and keep you cool out in the direct sun.
#2 Slap on a hat. Your forehead, cheeks, nose and ears need the same protection as arms and legs. Full coverage is important for maximum protection.
#3 Seek shade. Either natural shade from trees or bring tarps or umbrellas etc. Get in the shade regularly during those peak hours outside.
4# Slide on some shades. Keeping your eyes safe never looked so cool. Even reflected sun off the water can damage your eyes so make sure they are covered as well.
In summary, if possible avoid going into direct sunlight at all during peak hours. But if you must be outside during that time follow the sun smart tips. Or just head out and take your chances, what could possibly go wrong?
May the 4th be with you. To celebrate the Star Wars holiday and for those of you who just want exercise that helps more than it hurts this blog covers my #1 recommendation...yoda....er yoga.
First let me clear up some misconceptions. Social media will make you think that yoga is for incredibly flexible and strong people who live by the beach and only go out at sunrise or sunset. In actuality yoga can be done by anyone anywhere.
I have been doing yoga for 8 years now in everything from the back room in the office or my living room to a studio and yes I did practice in nature a few times also.
Many people think yoga is about getting the postures perfected. There are 104 year old yogis in India who still describe their yoga as a practice. Every day and every body is different. Some postures are physically impossible for one person and incredibly easy for another person. Much like Life itself it is not about the end result, but the daily journey.
Being a jedi master means achieving great strength and balance. Inner balance between the light and dark side of the force, and physically having good balance, kind of important in a lightsaber fight I suppose. You may not need to fight the dark side, but strength, balance and flexibility will keep you moving well into your 900th birthday just like master yoda.
