Our bodies are capable of amazing adaptation. We can "get away with" these bad habits for a long time before the warning signs of pain and chronic muscle tension begin to show up.( In previous blogs I have stated my position on pain. Though most patients come in with pain as the primary complaint, I am thrilled that they are experiencing it. Pain leads to action that can start the healing process.) So these adaptations to poor posture are actually doing us a disservice. Some patients may not get pain, numbness, burning sensations or the like before almost irreparable damage has been done to the spine. I used the previous examples as the most common reasons for a chiropractic visit, but those of us in the know also realize this impacts EVERY aspect of health and wellness. (Lung and heart function, metabolism, detoxification, mobility, longevity and the list goes on and on)
So my fellow posture warriors, if you see this travesty against posture in yourself, your loved ones, your enemies, or just some guy on the street for that matter, take action immediately. An ounce of prevention is worth a metric ton of the cure in this case.
Bring that phone to eye level, get that I pad off your lap, don't lay on the couch like that, bring your shoulders back, sit up straight. Just because my mom was a chiropractor doesn't mean i'm the only one who heard these comments growing up. Your mother innately knew the benefits of good posture too. So start forming new habits now that will keep you healthier many years down the road.
Or try this look out for yourself...
