When your dentist tells you to improve your oral hygiene, you know you need to brush and floss your teeth more often. This is important because teeth are bones, and if you do not take care of them, over time they break down and decay. This information is well established in research studies and has become common knowledge.

When your Chiropractor tells you to improve your spinal hygiene, what do you need to do? Although there is plenty of research on the effects of good posture on overall health, the tools we need to improve spinal hygiene are not common knowledge.

This fact was the basis for the creation of the Straighten Up America initiative to educate the masses about spinal hygiene. The premise is simple, if you take care of your spine as much as you take care of your teeth, you will be much healthier throughout your life. The best way to maintain good spinal hygiene is to keep it moving, and to work against the posture that results from all the time we spend on computers, phones and watching television.

We learn to take care of our teeth at a young age, and that is precisely when we need to learn good spinal habits. It's no secret that the average child these days spends less time being active and more time attached to electronic devices. These poor postural habits are leading to more health problems at earlier ages.

The Straighten Up America program focuses on teaching children and their parents better posture and spine strengthening exercises. Their website www.straightenupamerica.org has many examples of the exercises and ways for people to teach their community about spinal hygiene.

The best way to get started is to put a note on the mirror, every time you brush your teeth work on your spine as well. The benefits to your overall health and well being will be amazing. You only get one spine, take care of it!
