In case you don't follow both human and coral health stories regularly, let me summarize some facts. Sunscreen can be just as damaging to your skin as the sun it's protecting you from. It's not just hurting you, the cumulative effects of tons of washed off sunscreen at beaches around the world is destroying our reefs and marine life in them. For these reasons I remove sloping on sunscreen as a "Sun Smart" activity.
So what are you supposed to do to protect yourself and those kiddos during the summer? Lets learn how to responsibly enjoy the sun.
This is where the rest of the sun smart tips can help.
If you have to be outside in direct sunlight hours you MUST follow these sun protection tips.
#1 Slip on a long sleeve shirt and long pants. Many clothing companies now offer very light weight breathable clothing that can protect you and keep you cool out in the direct sun.
#2 Slap on a hat. Your forehead, cheeks, nose and ears need the same protection as arms and legs. Full coverage is important for maximum protection.
#3 Seek shade. Either natural shade from trees or bring tarps or umbrellas etc. Get in the shade regularly during those peak hours outside.
4# Slide on some shades. Keeping your eyes safe never looked so cool. Even reflected sun off the water can damage your eyes so make sure they are covered as well.
In summary, if possible avoid going into direct sunlight at all during peak hours. But if you must be outside during that time follow the sun smart tips. Or just head out and take your chances, what could possibly go wrong?
